Katsina (Poli-Mana), c. 1890 (#8317)
A wonderful 19th century katsina known as the Volz Collection. Volz was born in Germany in 1856 & immigrated to the US in 1876. In 1892 he was living in Arizona at Canyon Diablo near First Mesa as a trader merchant and postmaster and collected katsinas from the Hopis. Very little is known about Volz, except he was a trader on the Hopi and Navajo reservations from 1897 to 1910. His dolls had a particular style. In 1901 Volz sold 400 of these dolls, collected from the Hopis, to the Fred Harvey store. See 'American Indian Art', Summer 2005 regarding his collection.See file.9 1/2" H. x 4 1/2" W.SOLD -
